On October 6, Binance publicly announced they would update the pricing mechanisms for three specific assets: USDe, wBETH, and BNSOL. The old system valued these assets using Binance's internal spot market prices for cross-margin collateral calculations. The new system would use Oracle-based pricing. That created an eight-day window where everyone knew the vulnerability existed. Anyone paying attention understood that these three assets could potentially be manipulated on Binance during this transition period. This wasn't insider knowledge. It was public information.
To understand the full picture, it is also important to understand what these tokens are, as they are not "standard" tokens like BTC or ETH.
USDe (Ethena) is a synthetic dollar stablecoin designed to maintain a $1.00 peg through a delta-neutral hedging strategy. It's not backed by traditional reserves like USDC or USDT, but by a combination of collateral and perpetual futures positions. This makes it more complex and potentially more fragile than traditional stablecoins.
wBETH (Wrapped Beacon ETH) is Binance's liquid staking token for Ethereum. When you stake ETH on Binance, you receive wBETH, which represents your staked ETH plus accumulated staking rewards. It should trade slightly above ETH's price (currently around 1.07-1.08x ETH) because it includes those rewards. A crash to $430 when ETH was trading above $4,000 means it was valued at roughly 10% of what it should be worth, an absurd mispricing.
BNSOL (Binance Staked SOL) is the same concept for Solana. It's a liquid staking token that represents your staked SOL plus rewards, and should trade at a premium to SOL's price.
None of these are simple stablecoins. They're all derivative assets that derive their value from underlying positions. That makes them more complex to price correctly, but it also makes them vulnerable to oracle manipulation if the pricing mechanism relies on a single exchange's spot market during thin liquidity (and in this lies the key).
The Macro Trigger: Trump's Tariffs
Friday, October 10, 4:57 PM EDT: Trump announces 100% tariffs on all Chinese goods. This wasn't entirely unexpected; he'd been threatening tariffs for weeks, but the scale and timing caught markets off guard. Bitcoin, which had been trading around $119,000, begins to slide. Traditional markets panic. Crypto follows.
This is the first domino. Without this macro shock, nothing else that followed would have worked. The tariff announcement made markets nervous, created volatility, and set the stage for what came next.
The Short Position: Reasonable or Prescient?

The Critical Question: Who Dumped USDe?
Here's what we don't know: whether the Hyperliquid shorts and the Binance USDe dump came from the same entity. The CCN article and other sources speculate about coordination, but there's no definitive on-chain evidence linking the two operations.
It's possible they're the same actor. It's also possible they're completely separate:
Scenario 1 - Coordinated Attack: Someone with $1.1B in shorts positioned on Hyperliquid spent $60-90M to dump USDe on Binance, knowing it would trigger a cascade that would make their shorts profitable. Cost: $60-90M. Gain: $192M. Net: ~$100-130M profit - Happy days…
Scenario 2 - Separate Opportunists: The Hyperliquid whale took a reasonable bearish position ahead of potential tariff news. Separately, someone else noticed the Binance vulnerability window and decided to exploit it. Both profited, but independently.
Scenario 3 - Hidden Binance Shorts: The real profit might have come from short positions on Binance itself, which aren't publicly visible like Hyperliquid's on-chain data. The Hyperliquid whale is just the most visible actor, not necessarily the orchestrator.
We don't have enough evidence to determine which scenario is correct. What we can say is that the USDe dump was almost certainly deliberate exploitation of a known vulnerability. Whether it was coordinated with the Hyperliquid shorts remains speculation.
The Fallout
Hyperliquid saw $10.31 billion in liquidations and over 1,000 wallets were completely wiped out.
