But we're back, because the corridors kept hardening while we were away.

Swiss Banks Prove Tokenization Works Across Institutions

September 16-18 delivered what the financial world has been promising for years: actual cross-bank blockchain payments with legal finality. The Swiss Bankers Association, working with UBS, PostFinance, and Sygnum Bank, completed legally binding inter-institutional payments using deposit tokens on Ethereum. Malta's MFSA has been preparing for MiCA since 2018 and successfully passed ESMA's peer review, confirming its readiness. Rather than accepting a legitimate competitive advantage from early preparation, larger jurisdictions want to centralize oversight to ESMA.

The language betrays the politics: preventing "opportunistic choices between countries" means preventing companies from choosing jurisdictions that actually understand crypto operations.

Bitcoin Treasury Model Shows Structural Cracks

The week's most revealing development was structural: 25% of public Bitcoin treasury companies now trade below their net asset value (mNAV). Markets are pricing $0.85 to get $1 of Bitcoin exposure through these wrappers, and still considering them overvalued. What we're seeing is a shift from hype to substance, where companies with operational rigor and sustainable capital structures will win over leveraged speculation wrappers.

For leveraged wrappers, when mNAV exceeds 1.0, companies issue shares and buy Bitcoin in a self-reinforcing flywheel. Solmate (formerly Brera) raised $300 million, led by Pulsar Group with backing from Solana Foundation, ARK, and RockawayX. Helius raised $500 million in days as a NASDAQ-listed SOL accumulation vehicle. This isn't about improved fundamentals; it's retail chasing the next wrapper with positive price momentum while Bitcoin treasury premiums collapse. The mNAV cycle simply migrates to new assets as retail seeks leveraged exposure to momentum plays.

This structural sorting separates treasury infrastructure from volatility wrappers. Companies with proper governance and sustainable business models will survive the compression cycle; those existing solely as leveraged retail speculation vehicles collapse when sentiment shifts.

UAE Advances Corridor Strategy While Europe Debates

The contrast in corridor strategies became stark this week. While European regulators fought over supervisory authority, the UAE continued building operational infrastructure. Walid Abou Zaki, CEO of Unlock Blockchain, made the case for UAE inclusion in US cross-border recognition frameworks.

ADGM has regulated crypto since 2018. VARA upgraded its rulebooks in 2025, banning retail leverage, tightening custody, and raising token issuance standards. The Central Bank of UAE regulates stablecoins for retail use, while the US and EU still debate frameworks. Global exchanges like Binance, OKX, and Crypto.com are licensed and inspected; rules aren't just written, they're enforced.

The memorandum of understanding between VARA and the Securities & Commodities Authority shows national regulatory alignment is underway. This isn't fragmentation, it's coordination that works. As Zaki put it: "The UAE isn't waiting for permission to lead. It's already global-standard ready. Time the world recognized it".
