Cloud Gaming

Web3 / gaming metaverse

A model for delivering video games in which all game processing occurs on remote servers rather than on the player's local hardware, with only video stream output sent to the player's device and input controls sent back to the server. Cloud gaming eliminates the need for expensive gaming hardware, allowing games to run on any device with a fast internet connection. Major cloud gaming services include NVIDIA GeForce Now, Microsoft Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Google Stadia (discontinued in 2023). The model faces persistent challenges around latency, as the round-trip time between player input and server response must be below approximately 80 milliseconds to feel responsive, requiring data centers geographically close to players. Blockchain networks have entered this space through decentralized GPU compute networks that repurpose the same high-performance GPU infrastructure used for AI inference to also serve cloud gaming rendering workloads, creating a dual revenue stream for hardware operators and potentially lower prices through competition with centralized cloud providers. Example: Aethir, a decentralized cloud compute network launched in 2024, specifically targeted cloud gaming alongside AI inference as its primary use cases, allowing enterprise GPU hardware operators to contribute compute capacity to a shared marketplace. Aethir's architecture connects game publishers with GPU providers globally, aiming to solve the latency problem by distributing rendering capacity geographically closer to players than centralized alternatives. Why it matters for Web3: Cloud gaming represents a large and growing market where the economics of decentralized compute are potentially competitive with centralized cloud providers, particularly for latency-tolerant workloads or markets underserved by existing hyperscalers. For decentralized GPU networks, cloud gaming provides a use case that complements AI inference and helps diversify revenue sources, strengthening the business case for distributed infrastructure investment.
