Consensus Mechanisms
Web3 / blockchain technology
Consensus mechanisms are the protocols and algorithms that enable distributed networks to reach agreement on the validity and ordering of transactions without a central authority. These mechanisms protect against double-spending, fraudulent transactions, and network attacks by requiring network participants to follow specified rules for validating and adding new blocks. Different consensus approaches—such as Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, and Proof of Authority—trade off security, energy efficiency, and transaction speed based on their design and the specific needs of the blockchain network.
Example
Bitcoin uses Proof of Work consensus, requiring miners to solve computationally difficult cryptographic puzzles to validate transactions and earn block rewards, which secures the network against attacks.
Why It Matters
Consensus mechanisms are critical for maintaining blockchain integrity and security, enabling strangers to transact trustlessly by ensuring that network participants cannot arbitrarily alter transaction history or create false records.
