The property of data being accurate, consistent, and unaltered from its original state throughout its lifecycle—one of the core guarantees that blockchain technology provides. In blockchain systems, data integrity is maintained through cryptographic hash functions that make any alteration to historical records detectable, Merkle trees that allow efficient verification that a specific transaction is included in a block without downloading the full chain, and consensus rules that ensure network nodes only accept valid, unmodified state transitions. Immutability—once data is recorded on a sufficiently decentralized blockchain it cannot be altered—is the manifestation of data integrity in practice. Data integrity concerns extend to oracle data feeds, which must accurately represent off-chain information, and to cross-chain bridges, where messages transferred between chains must arrive intact and unmanipulated. Example: If someone attempts to retroactively alter a Bitcoin transaction from 2015, every subsequent block's hash would change, immediately invalidating the chain from that point forward. The honest chain maintained by the network would reject this alteration. Why it matters for Web3: Data integrity is what allows blockchain records to serve as a source of truth without trusting any single party. It enables transparent audit trails, trustless verification of ownership, and the permanence of digital records that underpins NFTs, financial settlements, and on-chain identity.
