ERC-7857

Web3 / cryptocurrency types

ERC-7857 is an emerging NFT standard introduced in January 2025 designed to enable secure transfer and execution of AI agents as autonomous smart contract entities. The standard incorporates cryptographic mechanisms for re-encryption, allowing AI agents to maintain encrypted state during transfer between owners while preserving their autonomous decision-making capabilities. This enables use cases where intelligent agents can be traded, leased, or transferred while protecting proprietary model parameters and ensuring continuity of operations. The standard addresses the unique requirements of autonomous systems operating on-chain by combining NFT principles with agent security and state management. Example: An AI trading agent represented as an ERC-7857 NFT could be transferred to a new owner, with the agent's encrypted parameters and trading logic automatically re-encrypted so the new owner can execute it without compromising the original creator's intellectual property. Why it matters for cryptocurrency: ERC-7857 opens new markets for autonomous agents as tradeable assets, protects AI creator interests through encryption, and establishes governance frameworks for on-chain artificial intelligence.
