The Interledger Protocol (ILP) is an open-source suite of standards designed to enable seamless payments and value transfers across different blockchain networks, payment systems, and ledgers that do not share a common consensus mechanism. It functions as a routing protocol similar to the Internet Protocol, connecting disparate ledgers through connector nodes that facilitate atomic swaps and conditional payments. ILP abstracts away the complexities of individual ledger types, allowing payments to flow through multiple networks using a standardized format. The protocol ensures transactions either complete end-to-end or fail without intermediate settlement, preventing value loss during cross-ledger transfers. Example: Ripple's xRapid (now RippleNet) utilizes the Interledger Protocol to enable banks and payment providers to send value across different blockchain networks and fiat currencies. A payment could route from a USD-based ledger through XRP to a Euro-based system, with ILP handling conversion and atomic settlement across all three ledgers. Why it matters for cross-chain interoperability: ILP standardizes how value moves between incompatible ledgers, enabling true interoperability beyond isolated token bridges. It reduces friction for cross-chain payments, supports multiple asset types, and creates a foundational layer for a connected financial ecosystem where any ledger can communicate with any other.
