Digital assets that are fundamentally embedded within a blockchain's core protocol and essential to its operation and security. Also called native or built-in tokens, intrinsic tokens serve critical functions such as paying transaction fees, powering smart contract execution, securing the network through staking, or governing protocol decisions through voting rights. These tokens are created at the blockchain's genesis and are integral to the network's economic model and incentive structure. Unlike tokens issued on top of blockchains through smart contracts, intrinsic tokens cannot be removed or substituted without fundamentally altering the blockchain's architecture and operation. Example: Ether (ETH) is the intrinsic token of the Ethereum blockchain, required to pay gas fees for transactions and smart contract execution, and essential for securing the network through proof-of-stake validation. Why it matters for tokenomics: Intrinsic tokens directly determine a blockchain's economic viability, security incentives, and fee structures, making their design critical to protocol sustainability and long-term network value.
