Layer 0
Web3 / blockchain technology
Layer 0 represents the foundational infrastructure upon which blockchain networks are built. It encompasses the physical and protocol-level components that enable decentralized systems to function, including peer-to-peer networking protocols, hardware infrastructure, internet connectivity, and cross-chain communication frameworks. Layer 0 operates beneath traditional Layer 1 blockchains and provides the essential plumbing that allows multiple blockchain networks to interoperate and communicate with one another. Without robust Layer 0 infrastructure, higher-layer blockchain solutions would lack the fundamental connectivity and data transmission capabilities necessary for operation.
Example
Polkadot functions as a Layer 0 network by providing a relay chain that enables multiple independent blockchains called "parachains" to connect, communicate, and share security through a unified consensus mechanism and cross-chain messaging protocol.
Why It Matters
Layer 0 solutions address scalability and interoperability limitations by enabling efficient cross-chain communication and reducing network congestion. They form the foundation for Web3's vision of connected, composable blockchain ecosystems rather than isolated networks.
