Multi-asset Restaking

Web3 / mining staking

A restaking model that accepts a broad range of assets as economic collateral to secure Actively Validated Services, rather than being limited to a single asset like ETH. EigenLayer's original design focused primarily on restaked ETH as the collateral asset, reflecting Ethereum's established security budget and the existing Ethereum validator infrastructure. Multi-asset restaking protocols extend this concept to accept USDC, WBTC, and various LSTs and LRTs as collateral, allowing holders of non-ETH assets to participate in restaking yield opportunities. Karak Network pioneered this model in 2024, building a restaking marketplace that accepts a diverse set of assets while applying appropriate risk parameters to each collateral type. The multi-asset approach increases the total collateral available to secure new protocols and allows a wider range of capital holders to earn restaking yields, but requires more sophisticated risk management to account for the different volatility and liquidity profiles of different collateral assets. Example: Karak Network launched in early 2024 accepting USDC, USDT, wBTC, wETH, and various Liquid Staking Tokens as collateral for its distributed security service (DSS) network, the Karak equivalent of EigenLayer's AVS framework. By mid-2024, Karak had attracted over $1 billion in total value locked across its multi-asset collateral base, demonstrating demand for restaking yield from holders who did not have ETH to restake through EigenLayer. Why it matters for Web3: Multi-asset restaking significantly expands the addressable market for shared security by removing the requirement to hold ETH. It allows stablecoin holders, Bitcoin holders, and other asset classes to participate in the restaking economy, potentially creating a much larger and more diverse security budget for emerging protocols. The risk management complexity is higher, but the capital efficiency benefits of putting idle assets to work as security collateral are substantial.
