Parathreads

Web3 / cross chain

Parathreads are a flexible participation model in the Polkadot ecosystem that allows projects to connect to the Relay Chain on a pay-as-you-go basis rather than securing a permanent parachain slot through auction or lease. Instead of committing significant resources upfront, parathread projects pay a transaction fee each time they want their block included and finalized on the Relay Chain. This model enables smaller projects, experimental chains, or applications with intermittent security needs to access Relay Chain security without competing in expensive slot auctions. Parathreads can be upgraded to parachains later if demand and resources permit, providing a gradient of commitment levels within the Polkadot ecosystem. Example: A low-traffic application or Layer-2 solution might operate as a parathread, only paying Relay Chain fees when it needs to finalize state or settle batched transactions, rather than consuming a dedicated parachain slot. Why it matters for cross-chain interoperability: Parathreads democratize access to Polkadot's security by reducing entry costs and eliminating the need for continuous slot occupation. This enables greater network diversity and allows new projects to test connectivity and security models before committing to permanent parachain status or exclusive slot rental.
