PBS

Web3 / blockchain technology

Proposer-Builder Separation, an architectural design for Ethereum block production that separates the roles of block proposer (the validator who attests and broadcasts the block) from block builder (the party who constructs the most profitable transaction ordering within the block). Before PBS, Ethereum validators both proposed and built blocks, creating strong incentives for validators to extract MEV by reordering user transactions, favoring sophisticated technical participants, and creating perverse incentives that could threaten consensus safety. PBS addresses this by creating a market where specialized block builders compete to produce the most profitable blocks and auction them to validators who simply propose whichever block offers the highest bid. This separation keeps validators simple and consensus-layer neutral while concentrating sophisticated transaction ordering in a competitive market of builders. PBS was initially implemented in a voluntary off-protocol form called MEV-Boost, and enshrining it natively in the Ethereum protocol remains an active research area. Example: MEV-Boost, developed by Flashbots and adopted by the majority of Ethereum validators by 2023, implements PBS off-protocol by allowing validators to outsource block building to a relay network connecting them to competing builders. Over 90% of Ethereum blocks are built through MEV-Boost, meaning the vast majority of Ethereum block production effectively operates under PBS despite it not yet being enshrined in the consensus protocol. Why it matters for Web3: PBS is central to Ethereum's roadmap for managing MEV in a way that preserves validator decentralization and consensus safety. Without it, the profitability of sophisticated MEV extraction creates pressure for validators to centralize and professionalize, threatening the distributed nature of Ethereum's validator set. PBS also enables Preconfirmations, fast transaction inclusion guarantees that depend on validators committing to include specific transactions before blocks are finalized.
