Real-World Asset Tokenization (RWA)

Web3 / defi

Real-World Asset Tokenization is the process of converting traditional tangible and intangible assets—such as real estate, bonds, commodities, fine art, and intellectual property—into digital tokens on blockchain networks. Each token typically represents a fractional or complete ownership stake in the underlying asset, recorded immutably on a distributed ledger. This process bridges traditional finance and blockchain by enabling 24/7 trading, fractional ownership enabling broader access, programmable settlement through smart contracts, and transparent ownership records, while maintaining legal enforceability through regulated tokenization platforms and issuers. Example: MakerDAO's collateralized debt position (CDP) system and protocols like Centrifuge enable RWA tokenization by allowing real-world assets like invoices and real estate to be locked as collateral to generate on-chain stablecoins. Centrifuge specifically connects SME invoicing and asset financing to DeFi by tokenizing real-world payment obligations as blockchain-based securities. Why it matters for DeFi: RWA tokenization unlocks trillions of dollars in traditional assets for DeFi composability, dramatically increases available collateral for lending protocols, and creates a critical bridge connecting institutional capital and legacy financial assets to decentralized finance infrastructure at scale.
