Ring signatures are a cryptographic technique that allows any member of a group to create a digital signature on behalf of that group without revealing which specific member signed the message. The signature proves that one member of the ring authorized the transaction, but external observers cannot determine which member it was. This technique combines the member's private key with the public keys of other group members to create a signature that appears to come from the entire group collectively. Example: Monero, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, uses ring signatures as a core privacy feature. Every Monero transaction is signed using ring signatures, which mix the sender's actual output with several decoy outputs from the blockchain, making it cryptographically impossible for observers to determine who actually initiated the transaction. Why it matters for privacy technology: Ring signatures are fundamental to cryptocurrency privacy because they enable financial transactions without exposing the sender's identity. This allows users to prove ownership and authorization of transactions while maintaining plausible deniability about their participation in the group.
