Solvers

Web3 / defi

Solvers are specialized market participants in intent-based blockchain systems responsible for fulfilling user intents competitively and optimally. When users submit transaction intents rather than explicit transactions, solvers analyze those intents and bid to execute them most efficiently, competing on price improvement, speed, and settlement certainty. Solvers profit from the spread between what users are willing to accept and actual execution prices, creating a competitive market that drives better outcomes. They may aggregate liquidity across multiple sources, batch intents for savings, or execute internal matching to minimize external trades, incentivizing sophisticated execution strategies. Example: In CoW Protocol, solvers analyze pending user sell and buy intents for USDC-USDT, identifying internal matching opportunities. A solver might match a user wanting to sell 100 USDC for USDT directly against another user wanting the opposite, earning the spread without touching an AMM. Why it matters for DeFi: Solvers create competitive pressure that improves execution quality for users while enabling sophisticated matching and MEV minimization, transforming passive liquidity fragmentation into an active optimization market.
