A STARK (Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge) is a type of zero-knowledge proof that allows one party to prove knowledge of data without revealing the data itself, using only transparent public randomness rather than secret trusted setup parameters. STARKs are quantum-resistant and scale efficiently to large computations, making them ideal for proving complex blockchain operations like state transitions or layer-two rollups. Unlike SNARKs, which require a trusted ceremony to generate proving keys, STARKs rely entirely on transparent cryptography, eliminating a class of security assumptions and making them more suitable for trustless systems. Example: StarkNet, developed by StarkWare, is a layer-two scaling solution for Ethereum that uses STARKs to compress thousands of transactions into a single proof posted to the Ethereum mainchain.
