Tokenized Assets (RWAs)

Web3 / cryptocurrency types

Tokenized assets, or Real-World Assets (RWAs), are digital representations of tangible and intangible assets recorded on blockchain networks, bridging traditional finance with decentralized systems. These include real estate properties, commodities, fine art, securities, intellectual property, and other valuable items converted into blockchain tokens that maintain a direct link to the underlying asset. Tokenization enables fractional ownership, improved liquidity, transparent ownership records, and seamless global transfer of traditionally illiquid assets. Each token typically represents verifiable ownership claims or rights, with smart contracts automating compliance and settlement processes that previously required intermediaries. Example: MakerDAO's introduction of tokenized real-world asset collateral allows institutions to deposit RWA-backed securities that generate yield while supporting the stability of the DAI stablecoin ecosystem through diversified collateral pools. Why it matters for cryptocurrency: Tokenized assets unlock trillions of dollars in previously illiquid value, demonstrating cryptocurrency's utility beyond speculation by enabling efficient asset transfer, fractional ownership democratization, and integration of traditional finance with blockchain infrastructure.
