Wrapped Bitcoin

Web3 / cryptocurrency types

A tokenized representation of Bitcoin issued on a blockchain other than Bitcoin's native chain, allowing BTC's value and liquidity to participate in DeFi protocols, smart contracts, and applications that Bitcoin's base layer cannot natively support. The most common form is WBTC (Wrapped Bitcoin) on Ethereum, where users deposit BTC with a custodian (historically BitGo) who mints an equivalent amount of WBTC on Ethereum, which can be used in Aave, Uniswap, Compound, and any other EVM-compatible protocol. The wrapping mechanism introduces custodial risk, as the issuer holds the underlying BTC and users must trust that the custodian maintains the 1:1 backing. Trust-minimized alternatives to custodial wrapping include sBTC on Stacks, which uses a threshold signature network of Stacks validators rather than a single custodian, and various Bitcoin Layer 2 approaches that anchor BTC value to other chains using different security models. Example: WBTC became the primary vehicle for deploying Bitcoin capital in Ethereum DeFi, accumulating over $10 billion in total value at peak adoption. However, the centralized custody model came under scrutiny in 2023 when concerns arose about BitGo's custody arrangements and potential changes to the custodian network, highlighting the irony of using Bitcoin, the most decentralized store of value, through a centralized wrapping mechanism as an Ethereum DeFi primitive. Why it matters for Web3: Wrapped Bitcoin demonstrates both the appeal and the limitations of bringing Bitcoin into the broader DeFi ecosystem. The enormous liquidity of BTC creates natural demand for its use as DeFi collateral and a medium of exchange, but the trust assumptions required for current wrapping mechanisms undermine the trustless properties that make Bitcoin valuable as a store of value. The development of trust-minimized BTC wrapping solutions including sBTC and Bitcoin Layer 2 bridges represents one of the most actively pursued goals in the Bitcoin DeFi ecosystem.
