ZK-Rollups
Web3 / infrastructure applications
ZK-Rollups are Layer-2 scaling solutions that bundle hundreds or thousands of transactions into a single batch, then use zero-knowledge proofs to cryptographically verify the correctness of all state transitions without requiring validators to re-execute the computation. These proofs are compact and can be verified on-chain efficiently, allowing the rollup to settle large transaction batches while maintaining full security guarantees inherited from Ethereum. Unlike optimistic rollups that assume transactions are valid by default, ZK-Rollups provide immediate finality once the proof is verified on-chain.
Example
StarkNet uses ZK-Rollups to scale Ethereum with Cairo-based zero-knowledge proofs, allowing developers to deploy Solidity-compatible smart contracts that benefit from dramatically lower fees and higher throughput while inheriting Ethereum's security model.
Why It Matters
ZK-Rollups eliminate the fraud-proof delay period, providing immediate settlement and greater capital efficiency. They represent the most capital-efficient scaling solution currently available, enabling Ethereum to support tens of thousands of transactions per second.
