The use of unique biological characteristics to confirm a person's identity, replacing or supplementing traditional credential-based authentication. Common modalities include fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, iris scanning, and voice identification. In the context of crypto and Web3, biometric verification serves two distinct purposes: securing wallets and transactions through convenient on-device authentication that removes the risk of lost or stolen passwords, and proving human uniqueness for proof-of-personhood systems that must distinguish real individuals from bots, duplicate accounts, or AI-generated identities. The latter application is particularly sensitive because biometric data is immutable, unlike passwords. A compromised biometric cannot be changed, creating permanent privacy risks if underlying data is mishandled, breached, or used to reconstruct identities. Privacy-preserving implementations use zero-knowledge proofs to issue verified credentials without storing raw biometric data, but the trust model for the initial scanning and verification step remains a point of significant debate. Example: Worldcoin, launched publicly in 2023 by Sam Altman and Tools for Humanity, uses a custom iris-scanning device called the Orb to generate biometric proofs and issue unique World ID credentials on-chain. By 2025, the project had scanned millions of users across dozens of countries, though it faced regulatory investigations in Spain, Germany, Kenya, and other jurisdictions over concerns about biometric data storage and informed consent practices. Why it matters for Web3: As AI-generated synthetic identities become trivially cheap to produce, the ability to verify that a wallet is controlled by a unique, real human gains enormous value for airdrop distribution, governance, and Sybil-resistant applications. Biometric verification, when implemented with strong privacy guarantees, offers a technically robust path to this goal, but it introduces a fundamental tension between identity verification and the pseudonymity that has characterized crypto from its origins.
