The use of physiological or behavioral characteristics to verify that a user is who they claim to be, serving as an authentication factor in digital systems. Common biometric modalities include fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, iris scanning, voice identification, and behavioral patterns like typing rhythm. Biometric authentication has become the dominant on-device security method for smartphones, where fingerprint and face recognition replaced PINs and passwords for the majority of daily authentication events. In the crypto wallet context, biometric authentication is used as a local authentication layer to unlock wallet software or authorize transactions, typically securing a private key stored in a device's secure enclave hardware. Passkey wallets, which represent the next generation of consumer wallet design, depend fundamentally on biometric authentication through the WebAuthn standard, using device biometrics to generate and sign cryptographic keys without exposing seed phrases to users. Example: Passkey-based wallets including those offered by Coinbase and other major providers use the WebAuthn standard to let users authenticate with fingerprint or Face ID, with the private key never leaving the device's secure enclave hardware. This eliminates the seed phrase user experience while maintaining cryptographic security, making wallet recovery dependent on device-level backup mechanisms like iCloud Keychain rather than a written phrase. The friction of seed phrase management has been one of crypto's most significant adoption barriers. Replacing it with biometric authentication dramatically lowers the barrier to entry, but introduces new dependencies on device manufacturers, operating system vendors, and cloud backup providers that are less decentralized than the seed phrase model it replaces.
