Social networking platforms built on open protocols or blockchains where no single company owns or controls the network, user data is portable across applications, and content moderation policies are distributed or user-configurable rather than set by a central authority. Decentralized social media attempts to address the structural problems of platform social networks including censorship and deplatforming, data exploitation for advertising, interoperability failures that lock users into specific apps, and algorithmic manipulation of content. Two main technical approaches have emerged: federated networks using open protocols (like ActivityPub used by Mastodon and the AT Protocol used by Bluesky) where independent servers can communicate with each other, and fully on-chain social networks (like Lens Protocol) where content and social graphs are stored directly on blockchains. Each approach involves tradeoffs between censorship resistance, scalability, user experience, and data permanence. Example: Bluesky, spun out from Twitter in 2019 and developed on the AT Protocol, grew rapidly following Twitter's acquisition by Elon Musk in late 2022, accumulating over 30 million users by early 2025 by offering a familiar microblogging interface with user-controlled algorithmic feeds and portable accounts that can migrate between hosting providers without losing followers or post history. Why it matters for Web3: Decentralized social media represents one of the clearest real-world applications of decentralization principles to everyday internet use. Its success or failure will test whether the values of user ownership, data portability, and censorship resistance can produce consumer products that compete with centralized incumbents at scale. The political and social dynamics around Twitter/X's acquisition made the 2022-2025 period the most active in decentralized social media's history, bringing genuine user growth to experiments that had previously been largely theoretical.
