Social Media
Web3 / social community
Online platforms and services that enable users to create, share, and interact with content and other users, which have become both a primary distribution channel for crypto communities and an increasingly relevant application layer for blockchain technology. In the traditional sense, social media platforms like Twitter/X, Telegram, Discord, and Reddit serve as the primary communication infrastructure of the crypto ecosystem, where market sentiment forms, projects announce developments, communities organize, and narratives propagate. In the Web3 sense, blockchain technology is being applied to social media infrastructure itself through decentralized social networks (Farcaster, Lens Protocol, Bluesky), on-chain social graphs that persist beyond any single platform, and social token experiments that align platform value with user contributions. Frames on Farcaster represented a significant technical evolution by embedding on-chain transaction capability directly within social feeds. Example: Farcaster's growth following its open-network launch in 2023 illustrated both the appeal and the challenge of blockchain-native social media. Its integration of crypto wallets into user profiles enabled features impossible on traditional platforms, including NFT-gated channels, token-tipped posts, and embedded on-chain applications in Frames. However, user numbers remained small compared to centralized alternatives, highlighting the persistent tension between crypto-native features and mainstream social network accessibility. Why it matters for Web3: Social media is simultaneously crypto's most important distribution channel and an application category where blockchain technology can genuinely improve user experience through ownership, portability, and programmability. The on-chain social media experiments of 2023-2025 provided important evidence about which blockchain properties users value in social contexts and which architectural decisions (full on-chain vs. hybrid off-chain) are practical at scale.
