A blockchain network architected from the ground up to maximize transaction throughput and minimize latency as primary design goals, typically achieving tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of transactions per second through parallelized execution, specialized consensus mechanisms, and hardware requirements that prioritize speed over broad validator participation. High-performance blockchains occupy a distinct category from general-purpose chains that balance multiple competing priorities: they accept trade-offs in decentralization, geographic distribution, or hardware accessibility in exchange for performance characteristics that enable applications like decentralized order books, real-time gaming, high-frequency trading, and complex on-chain computation that are impractical on slower networks. Monad, which parallelizes EVM execution to run transactions concurrently rather than sequentially, and Sei, which builds a native order book matching engine into its base layer for trading applications, are prominent examples that launched in the 2024-2025 period. Example: Monad launched its testnet in early 2025 and mainnet shortly after, demonstrating 10,000 TPS with full EVM compatibility through optimistic parallel execution. Rather than requiring developers to rewrite contracts for a new VM, Monad allows standard Solidity code to run at dramatically higher throughput by executing non-conflicting transactions simultaneously, targeting trading and DeFi applications where existing EVM chains create latency bottlenecks. Why it matters for Web3: High-performance blockchains test whether decentralized infrastructure can eventually match the performance characteristics of centralized systems, which is a prerequisite for replacing rather than merely supplementing traditional finance. Each generation of high-performance chains has raised the ceiling for what is possible on-chain, enabling new application categories and attracting developers and users from centralized alternatives.
