Real-time Blockchain

Web3 / blockchain technology

A blockchain architecture designed to achieve sub-second or near-instantaneous transaction confirmation and block production, enabling on-chain applications that require latency competitive with traditional web services and centralized systems. Standard blockchains produce blocks every several seconds to minutes, creating a fundamental latency floor that makes real-time interactive applications impractical. Real-time blockchains achieve their performance through a combination of highly optimized consensus protocols, single high-performance sequencers with specialized hardware, parallel execution pipelines that process transactions concurrently rather than sequentially, and preconfirmation mechanisms that give users near-instant transaction feedback before final inclusion. MegaETH is the most ambitious attempt to bring real-time performance to the Ethereum ecosystem, targeting 100,000 TPS with millisecond latency on an Ethereum Layer 2. Example: MegaETH's architecture separates block production (handled by a single optimized sequencer capable of producing blocks every 10 milliseconds) from state verification (distributed across the network) and settlement (anchored to Ethereum). During its testnet in 2025, MegaETH demonstrated processing 100,000 TPS in benchmark conditions, with average transaction confirmation times measured in milliseconds rather than seconds, enabling on-chain order book trading and gaming applications that had previously required centralized infrastructure. Why it matters for Web3: Real-time blockchains represent the most aggressive attempt to close the performance gap between decentralized and centralized systems, targeting the applications where that gap has historically been most decisive: financial trading, gaming, and interactive consumer applications. If successful at production scale, they could enable on-chain applications whose user experience is indistinguishable from centralized alternatives, removing performance as a barrier to mainstream adoption of decentralized infrastructure.
