Layer-2 Solutions

Web3 / infrastructure applications

Layer-2 solutions are secondary blockchain systems built on top of existing blockchains that process transactions off the main chain before settling them on-chain, dramatically improving scalability and reducing costs. Common approaches include rollups, which bundle multiple transactions together and submit a single proof to the main chain, and sidechains or payment channels that temporarily hold assets off-chain. By moving the majority of transactional volume away from the main blockchain, Layer-2s reduce network congestion, lower gas fees, and increase transaction throughput while maintaining the security guarantees of the underlying Layer-1 blockchain. Users can move funds between Layer-1 and Layer-2 through bridges, accessing faster, cheaper transactions without sacrificing decentralization. Layer-2 solutions have become essential infrastructure for making blockchains practical for everyday use.

Example

Arbitrum and Optimism are popular Ethereum Layer-2 rollup solutions that have processed billions in transaction volume, offering transaction costs typically 10-100 times lower than Ethereum mainnet.

Why It Matters

Layer-2 solutions address blockchain scalability constraints, enabling widespread adoption by making transactions affordable and fast while preserving decentralization and security properties that make blockchains trustworthy.
