Rollups
Web3 / layer2 solutions
Rollups are Layer 2 scaling solutions that execute transactions off-chain and submit a single bundled proof to the Layer 1 blockchain, compressing hundreds or thousands of transactions into one on-chain commitment. Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid by default and only compute proofs if challenged, while zero-knowledge rollups cryptographically prove every transaction's validity before settlement. Rollups inherit Layer 1 security while reducing transaction costs and increasing throughput by orders of magnitude, making them the most promising near-term scaling solution for Ethereum and other blockchains.
Example
Optimism, an optimistic rollup launched on Ethereum in 2021, processes transactions with seven-day fraud-proof windows, enabling users to transact for pennies while maintaining full Ethereum security and EVM compatibility for existing dApps.
Why It Matters
Rollups represent the most viable path to blockchain scalability without sacrificing security or decentralization. They enable Layer 1 blockchains to scale to mainstream adoption levels while keeping user funds protected by Layer 1 security, making them critical infrastructure for Web3 growth.
