Passkey Wallets

Web3 / wallets security

Passkey wallets are cryptocurrency wallets that use passkeys—cryptographic credentials stored securely in device hardware or operating systems—instead of traditional seed phrases or private keys that users must remember and backup. Passkeys leverage WebAuthn standards and biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello) to authorize transactions. The private cryptographic material never leaves the secure enclave of your device, making them resistant to phishing and remote attacks. These wallets can implement multi-device synchronization through cloud backups (encrypted with your device's biometric), enabling account recovery without exposing raw cryptographic keys to the user or centralized servers. Example: Coinbase Smart Wallet and Apple's upcoming native crypto wallet both use passkeys, allowing users to approve transactions with Face ID, with recovery handled automatically across their devices if they lose their phone. Why it matters for crypto security: Passkey wallets eliminate seed phrase management, the largest source of user error and theft in cryptocurrency, while providing phishing-resistant authentication that's significantly more secure than passwords or even hardware security keys for most users.
