Proof of Activity

Web3 / mining staking

Proof of Activity is a hybrid consensus mechanism that combines Proof of Work and Proof of Stake to enhance blockchain security and immutability. The system begins with miners solving computational puzzles similar to PoW, but the validation phase switches to random validators who must stake coins to confirm blocks. This dual approach ensures that neither miners nor validators can easily manipulate the chain, as attacking it would require controlling both significant computational power and substantial stake simultaneously.

Example

Decred implemented Proof of Activity as a core innovation, where miners solve blocks through PoW but stakeholders holding DCR tokens must vote to confirm their validity, creating accountability across both groups.

Why It Matters

Proof of Activity strengthens chain security by requiring attackers to control expensive mining hardware and significant token holdings simultaneously, making 51% attacks economically prohibitive while distributing power between two consensus participant groups.
