Based Rollups

Web3 / layer2 solutions

Based Rollups are Layer 2 solutions where transaction sequencing is performed directly by Ethereum Layer 1 validators rather than by a separate centralized or decentralized sequencer operator. In this architecture, Ethereum's own proposers order transactions before they reach the rollup, eliminating the need for an independent sequencing layer and reducing potential points of failure or censorship. Based rollups inherit Ethereum's robust consensus guarantees and validator set, creating a tighter security coupling between Layer 2 and Layer 1 compared to traditional sequencer-based rollups. Example: Optimism is transitioning toward a "Based Sequencing" model where Ethereum validators directly sequence transactions for the Optimism rollup, replacing the previous centralized sequencer. This change strengthens censorship resistance and removes Optimism's dependency on maintaining a separate sequencer infrastructure and governance. Why it matters for Layer 2 scaling: Based rollups maximize security inheritance from Ethereum mainnet by eliminating independent sequencer risk. This strengthens user confidence in Layer 2 safety while simplifying the technical stack, making rollups more decentralized and reducing operational overhead for protocol maintainers.
