The ability of separate Layer 2 networks to communicate, transfer assets, and share state with one another without routing through Ethereum mainnet for every interaction, enabling a cohesive multi-L2 ecosystem rather than a collection of isolated chains. Currently, moving assets between two different L2s typically requires bridging from the source L2 down to Ethereum mainnet and then up to the destination L2, incurring mainnet gas costs, delays, and bridging risk twice. True L2 interoperability would allow direct L2-to-L2 communication with security guarantees inherited from Ethereum, dramatically reducing friction for users and capital. The Optimism Superchain, which connects OP Stack chains through shared governance and native interoperability messaging, represents the most mature implementation of this vision, with native cross-chain message passing between Base, OP Mainnet, Mode, Zora, and other Superchain members without mainnet touchpoints. Example: The Superchain's native interoperability protocol, launched in 2025, allows tokens to transfer between any two OP Stack chains in a single transaction using a burn-and-mint mechanism secured by the shared sequencer and fault proof system, rather than through a third-party bridge. Users moving USDC from Base to OP Mainnet pay only a small cross-chain fee rather than mainnet gas costs, completing the transfer in seconds. Why it matters for Web3: L2 interoperability is necessary for the multi-chain vision of Web3 to feel seamless to users rather than fragmented and technically demanding. If every cross-L2 interaction requires multiple steps, significant costs, and mainnet delays, the practical experience of using multiple L2s is worse than staying on a single chain. Native interoperability within L2 ecosystems like the Superchain, and eventually between different L2 families, is a prerequisite for a genuinely unified Ethereum scaling layer.
