OP Stack

Web3 / layer2 solutions

An open-source modular software toolkit developed by Optimism that provides the components needed to launch an Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 rollup, enabling any team to deploy their own L2 using the same codebase that powers OP Mainnet. The OP Stack decomposes rollup architecture into modular components: execution (running the EVM), settlement (posting data to Ethereum), consensus (ordering transactions), and data availability. Each component can be configured or replaced, allowing developers to customize their L2 while inheriting battle-tested code from Optimism's production deployment. Crucially, all OP Stack chains share the same fault proof system and bridge architecture, enabling native interoperability between them through the Superchain vision: a network of L2s that can communicate and transfer assets natively without external bridges. Base (launched by Coinbase), Zora, Mode, and World Chain are among the prominent chains built on the OP Stack. Example: Coinbase launched Base on the OP Stack in August 2023, becoming the highest-profile adoption of the framework and driving Base to become one of the most active L2s by transaction count within months. Coinbase's choice of the OP Stack over building a custom chain validated Optimism's strategy of building a platform rather than a single chain, and Base's distribution through Coinbase's 100+ million user base dramatically expanded OP Stack chain usage. Why it matters for Web3: The OP Stack demonstrated that L2 infrastructure could be effectively open-sourced and modularized into a deployable platform, creating a network effect where each new OP Stack chain strengthens the overall Superchain ecosystem. It established the 'rollup-as-a-service' category and created competitive pressure that accelerated similar efforts from Arbitrum (Orbit) and ZK rollup providers, ultimately benefiting developers and users through more options and faster innovation.
