Superchain

Superchain is Optimism's architectural vision for a horizontally scalable ecosystem of interconnected Layer 2 blockchains that share a unified security model, communication protocol, and liquidity layer. Rather than creating isolated Layer 2 networks, the Superchain concept envisions many specialized rollups operating as a coordinated system, with shared validator sets, standardized bridge infrastructure, and native interoperability. Each chain in the Superchain can optimize for specific use cases while remaining cryptographically connected to others, reducing fragmentation and enabling capital and user mobility across chains. Example: The Optimism Superchain includes OP Mainnet (general-purpose rollup), Base (Coinbase's rollup), and emerging Superchain-compatible rollups. Users can move ETH or tokens between these chains using Superchain bridges with minimal friction, and developers can launch new application-specific rollups that inherit security from the unified validator set.
