Plasma is a Layer-2 scaling framework that creates hierarchical child chains, or "plasma chains," anchored to the Ethereum mainnet through periodic commitments. These child chains operate independently with their own consensus mechanisms and validators, processing transactions and smart contract execution off-chain while periodically submitting merkle roots of transactions to the main chain for settlement. The framework includes exit mechanisms that allow users to withdraw their funds back to Layer-1, though these exits can be challenged if validators behave maliciously, requiring users to prove their transaction history with merkle proofs. Example: Polygon originally launched as a Plasma chain for Ethereum, enabling scalable token transfers and dApps before later expanding its architecture to include sidechains and other scaling solutions to serve diverse developer needs. Why it matters for blockchain infrastructure: Plasma pioneered the child-chain scaling model, demonstrating how hierarchical structures can reduce mainnet load.
