The specific moment or transaction in which a cryptocurrency token is officially created and minted on a blockchain, representing the technical origin of a token's supply and typically coinciding with or closely preceding its public distribution. The TGE is distinct from a token launch in that it refers specifically to the on-chain creation of tokens, while a launch encompasses the broader commercial and community event of making tokens available to the public. In practice, TGE and launch are often used interchangeably, but the TGE specifically marks the point at which tokens first exist on-chain. TGEs can happen in various ways: a smart contract deployment that mints all tokens simultaneously, a gradual minting process tied to liquidity provision, or a bonding curve that mints tokens in response to purchases. Pre-TGE refers to the period before this event, when projects may allocate points, conduct sales, or build community without yet creating the token itself. Example: Pre-TGE point farming campaigns became a major mechanism for early user acquisition in 2023-2024, with protocols like EigenLayer, Ethena, and dozens of others distributing points to users who interacted with their protocols before a token was created. The TGE then converted accumulated points to tokens according to a formula, linking early user behavior to token distribution without committing to specific token allocations before the project's valuation and economic model were finalized. Why it matters for Web3: The TGE is one of the most strategically sensitive moments in any crypto project's lifecycle, determining the initial token distribution, establishing the starting market cap, and setting expectations for the project's economic model. The separation between TGE and broader launch events, and the extended pre-TGE phases that have become common, reflects the industry's evolution toward more sophisticated capital formation and community building strategies.
