Token Launch
Web3 / tokenomics
The broader commercial, community, and market event of making a new cryptocurrency token available to the public for the first time, encompassing the technical token generation event, initial exchange listings, the activation of any vesting and unlock schedules, and the public communications and community building activities that accompany initial availability. A token launch is distinct from its underlying token generation event: the TGE is the technical creation of tokens, while the launch is the economic and social event of releasing them into circulation. Token launch formats have diversified significantly: initial DEX offerings (IDOs) on decentralized exchanges, centralized exchange listings negotiated with major venues, community airdrops that distribute tokens to existing users, and fair launches where tokens are available to all simultaneously without preferential access. Each format carries different implications for price discovery, initial distribution fairness, and listing venue economics. Example: Hyperliquid's HYPE token launch in November 2024 via a community airdrop with no VC allocation, no exchange fees, and no pre-sale became the reference model for the fairest large-scale token launch in recent memory. By distributing tokens based purely on historical protocol usage and avoiding insider allocation, the launch generated enormous positive sentiment and sustained market performance compared to VC-backed launches that typically face immediate selling pressure from early investors. Why it matters for Web3: Token launches are defining moments that set the trajectory of a crypto project's community relationships, tokenomics, and long-term economics. Poorly designed launches with excessive insider allocation, immediately liquid VC tokens, or inadequate community distribution create lasting resentment and structural selling pressure. Well-designed launches that reward genuine early users and create broadly distributed ownership establish the community trust that sustains projects through bear markets and technical challenges.
